Ophelia’s Rope is a two-person long form improv group that takes its inspiration from you. That’s right, you. A typical show is kicked off by Ophelia’s Rope asking its audience one or two random questions, proceeding to morph the answers into a setting, plot, and duo of unexpected, and sometimes quirky, characters. With no story predicted, no ending forecasted, Ophelia’s Rope wanders the worlds of imagination, coloring surprising audience inspired scenes.
We asked Ophelia’s Rope the following questions:
If your troupe were a comic or sci-fi team, what would be your universe?
The Scooby Gang from Joss Whedon’s Buffy.
What is your origin story?
We were both invited to audition for Massive Creativity’s improv group. We met, fell in improv love, and realized seven years later, after many unforeseen twists and turns, both improv-related and totally improv-unrelated, that we needed to be a duo. We are celebrating our 10 Year Improv/Non-Improv Anniversary this year!
Do you have any troupe rituals to prepare for a show?
There is often queso or ice cream (and fries that Ruth orders and Autumn will nibble). Accents have been known to make appearances. Some form of something that resembles contact improv and makes everybody backstage think that we’re going to do a totally different kind of show than what we actually do. As long as we mind-meld and feel connected, it doesn’t matter what we do so long as we do it together.
What are you most looking forward to about this year’s festival?
Finding out what the Audience suggestion will be! And Workshops! And the sense of camaraderie that happens at any festival! And the special can’t get any where else feeling you get from being a part of a festival in your hometown! Go H-Town!
